Ever since the tragic death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis last month, millions of people around the world have come together to protest racial injustices and police brutality, among other social issues.

Many athletes have spoken out on this subject, including longtime Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, who was inspired to address social issues after conversing with his African-American teammates and coaches.

The left-hander issued a statement on the eve of Juneteenth, recognizing the importance of the day while extending his support to the Black Lives Matter movement.

His powerful words were met with praise from the likes of David Price, Kenley Jansen and Walker Buehler. They were all appreciative that Kershaw was using his platform for the greater good, spreading awareness to other players and his large fanbase.

Kershaw believes white athletes have an obligation to use their voice to facilitate the necessary change needed for equality throughout society, via LZ Granderson of the L.A. Times:

“We can’t just sit back,” Kershaw said. “As white athletes or white people in general with platforms, it’s very important that we listen to our Black teammates and Black friends, let them teach us what we can do and more than anything be a voice and try to promote as much change as we can. I know that’s a lot of words still, but for us to see tangible change the first thing we can do is become aware and promote awareness.”

For Kershaw to speak out against these injustices is not in the least bit surprising. He has always been present in the local community through his foundation, Kershaw’s Challenge, while additionally helping children and families in Africa.

Other members of the Dodgers organization have taken a more proactive approach over the past few weeks as well. Justin and Kourtney Turner also pledged their support for needed change and vowed to take action upon learning how they could best do so.
