In a mild surprise Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced Tuesday that Austin Barnes will be part of the 25-man active roster for the National League Division Series. They’re set to carry 14 position players, including three catchers, and 11 pitchers.
Barnes appeared in just seven games after joining the Dodgers in September from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Despite the lack of playing time, it’s clear the organization values the multiple facets of Barnes’ skill set.
“It gives us the flexibility to potentially run for Yasmani (Grandal) if need be,” Roberts explained. “And Austin is also a right-handed bat off the bench. He can run, play second and third base. He’s a pretty versatile player.”
Barnes played nine games at catcher this season for the Dodgers, seven at second base and one at third. He logged time at those same three positions with Oklahoma City, plus made one start in center field.
“His versatility certainly plays into it (carrying three catchers),” Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said.
“He’s got some foot speed, especially relative to catchers. Also, it frees up Chooch for potential big spots against their left-handed relievers. We just felt like overall that helped complete and fill out our roster even more.”
Barnes is one of seven rookies expected to be on the Dodgers’ NLDS roster once it’s made official Friday morning.
