Los Angeles Dodgers starter Alex Wood got off to an 11-0 record in 2017 en route to his first career All-Star appearance, so when he struggled to begin the 2018 season, no one was more disappointed in him than himself.
After a rough three-start stretch at the end of May and into the beginning of June, Wood admitted that it was the toughest period of his career. He has gotten past that now, though, earning wins in four straight starts.
Included in that is Monday’s performance in a 17-1 route of the Pittsburgh Pirates at Dodger Stadium. After the game, Wood admitted that he is happy to have gotten past that rough stretch and is now looking forward to the future with him and his teammates playing good baseball, as seen on SportsNet LA:
“Winning is just nice. Four in a row is nice, especially where I was after that three-start stretch. So I feel good, just trying to keep moving forward and looking towards the future. Hopefully, we’ll keep swinging the bats well and play well going into the All-Star break.”
Wood tossed six innings of one-run ball against Pittsburgh, giving up just six hits while striking out three without allowing a walk. The only run came on a changeup that he hung against Elias Diaz, and he took him out of the park to left-center.
In his last four starts, Wood has posted a 1.82 ERA in 24.2 innings, while striking out 18 hitters and only walking three. After starting off 1-5 on the season, Wood has moved his record to 5-5 to go along with a 3.84 ERA and 1.15 WHIP.
There was some talk about him potentially being moved to the bullpen, but those have been silenced with Wood looking like he has returned to his 2017 form.
