Los Angeles Dodgers Minor League outfielder Alex Verdugo was named the Texas League Player of the Week for his strong stretch of play with Double-A Tulsa from July 11-17. Verdugo joins Willie Calhoun (May 23-29, June 6-12) and Andrew Toles (June 13-19) as Drillers to win the weekly honor this season.
During the period he was recognized for, Verdugo hit safely in all five games he played in, batting .444/.500/.944 (8-for-18), with two home runs, six RBIs, and five extra-base hits. He was selected by the Dodgers out of Sahuaro High School (Arizona) in the second round of the 2014 draft.
Verdugo spent his first professional season with the Arizona League Dodgers and rookie-level Ogden Raptors.
In 2015 he was with Low-A Great Lakes and High-A Rancho Cucamonga. At 20-years-old, he began the season as the youngest player in the Texas League.
That’s hardly been much of a hurdle as Verdugo is batting .299/.361/.464 with 16 doubles, 11 home runs and 50 RBIs on the year. He was one of 12 Drillers named to the Texas League All-Star Game this season.
Verdugo appeared on multiple midseason prospect ranking updates, including being rated No. 37 overall by ESPN Keith Law. Meanwhile, Baseball America ranked Verdugo No. 44 in their top-100 update, and the No. 4 prospect in the Dodgers organization.
