Dodgers News: Alex Verdugo Doesn’t Believe ‘Any Pitcher Can Really Get Me Out Consistently’

Long considered the organization’s top positional prospect, outfielder Alex Verdugo finally received the first big break of his career by being included on the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 2019 Opening Day roster.

Verdugo was initially relegated to a bench role due to the club’s existing starters already in place, but that has since changed with A.J. Pollock undergoing elbow surgery that has sidelined him at least until July.

With the 31-year-old now set to miss a substantial amount of time, Verdugo is earning more playing time in center field as a result. He has taken advantage of his newfound opportunity, impressing on both sides of the ball in the early going.

Verdugo believes his extended time at the Major League level has turned him into a more confident player and opined that he can now fare against any opposing pitcher on the mound, via SportsNet LA:

“It’s just something I’ve evolved into. I don’t think there’s any stage that’s too bright for me. I don’t think any pitcher can really get me out consistently. I think the matchup of me versus anybody is a good matchup. I’ve got a lot of confidence up there.”

Verdugo’s likable personality and infectious energy has spread to his Dodgers teammates. Clayton Kershaw and Justin Turner are among those to praise Verdugo for the positivity he provides both on-the-field and in the clubhouse.

Likewise, Verdugo’s enthusiasm has been noted by Dodgers fans. The crowd erupts to the tune of his walk-up song, “Volver, Volver,” which in turn, energizes the rookie when he steps up to the plate.

In 37 games this season, Verdugo is hitting .344/.386/.570 with five doubles, two triples, four home runs and 19 RBI over 101 plate appearances.
