2024 MLB All-Star Game Reserves: Mookie Betts Named To National League Team

Mookie Betts is among the Los Angeles Dodgers heading to the 2024 MLB All-Star Game at Globe Life Field, earning a selection as one of the reserve players on the National League team.

Betts had been in position to earn a starting spot at shortstop as he led at the position heading into Phase 2. However, Betts lost his lead at that point to former teammate Trea Turner.

Turner is part of seven Philadelphia Phillies players who were named to the 2024 All-Star Game, which is an MLB-high.

Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Teoscar Hernández, Will Smith and Tyler Glasnow are also Dodgers All-Stars this year. It’s the third time since 2017 the Dodgers have at least six All-Stars.

Betts is batting .304/.405/.488 with 16 doubles, 10 home runs and 40 RBI through 72 games. Betts had been on track to become the first player in All-Star Game history to start in the outfield and at shortstop.

Although Betts earned another All-Star selection in his Dodgers career, he’s not going to participate in the 94th Midsummer Classic due to a left hand fracture. Betts’ recovery is going well but he is expected to remain sidelined into August.

While the 31-year-old nearly earned an All-Star selection at shortstop, it’s possible the Dodgers move him back to second base once he returns.

“It can’t be harder than anything I’ve taken on this year,” Betts said of a potential position change. “So it doesn’t matter. Anything’s going to be hard at this point, so I’m up for whatever challenge.”

Mookie Betts’ All-Star Game history

Betts now is an eight-time All-Star, which have been split evenly during his career with the Boston Red Sox and Dodgers. Betts currently is in the midst of four consecutive All-Star Game selections.
