The Los Angeles Dodgers dropped their series finale to the Miami Marlins on Sunday afternoon, but of greater concern was Miguel Rojas exiting the game after aggravating his right shoulder.
The injury occurred in the bottom of the eighth inning, when the veteran utility man attempted to make a diving stop on a ball that trickled into center field for a base hit. Rojas initially remained in the game but was pinch-hit for in the top of the ninth by Tommy Edman.
“It’s really sore right now,” Rojas said on SportsNet LA after the Dodgers’ 6-4 loss. “We’ll wait until tomorrow morning. I will get a bunch of treatment and see what the doctors and the medical staff say. I’m pretty sure I’m probably going to get an injection, so this is not going to be something new for me.
“I played through some shoulder pain before. And kind of like what I felt in that place, my labrum tear that I have in my right shoulder maybe got a little bigger. It got worse because I felt a little bit of a pop on the back of my shoulder, so we’ll see tomorrow and see how it feels in the next 24, 48 hours.
“But looking forward to bouncing back as soon as possible.”
Rojas further revealed he has dealt with the labrum tear for most of his career and is once again going to try to play through it.
“I mean, it’s that time of the year when you will do whatever is possible to stay on the roster, to stay in the lineup, and play through minor stuff,” Rojas said. “I don’t think this is going to sideline me for a while, but at the same time, I got to be responsible and see how I feel tomorrow and the next day.”
Rojas does not believe he will need to undergo an MRI on his right shoulder and will try to manage the pain with a likely cortisone injection. The Dodgers will wait to see how Rojas responds to treatment before determining his availability for their series against the Cincinnati Reds.
However it unfolds, Rojas’ injury is the latest for the Dodgers to manage as October nears. Freddie Freeman is experiencing right knee trouble and Shohei Ohtani is on the 15-day injured list after attempting to play through left knee, right bicep and neck injuries.

Emotions were already running high for Rojas before the injury as Sunday most likely marked his final game in Miami. The 37-year-old spent eight seasons with the Marlins and was honored with a tribute video prior to the series finale at loanDepot Park.
