Max Muncy continued his rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday against the Oakland Athletics’ affiliate Las Vegas Aviators. The 33-year-old started at third base and went 1-for-5 with a run scored in Oklahoma City’s 10-8 win.

The bigger story, however, was Muncy facing the Athletics’ shortstop prospect of the same name for the first time in his career. Not only do the two players share the same name, but they also were born on Aug. 25, albeit 12 years apart.

The Dodgers’ Muncy acknowledged the uniqueness of the story and appreciated having a part in it, via Ron Futrell of Vegas Strong Sports:

“It’s kind of a cool thing. It’s not very often you see that happen.”

The Athletics selected the younger infielder with the 25th overall pick of the 2021 MLB Draft. Dodgers director of amateur scouting Billy Gasparino said at the time that L.A. would have considered picking Muncy if he fell to No. 29.

“You know, we were rooting for that because it would just be such a cool story,” Gasparino said. “I don’t know for sure, but I loved that concept. I’ll just tell you that. I loved it.”

Ironically enough, the Dodgers’ Muncy began his professional career with the Athletics when he was selected by the organization in the fifth round of the 2012 MLB Draft.

Muncy played in parts of two seasons with the Athletics before he was released during the 2017 season. Muncy then signed with the Dodgers and went on to revitalize his career.

Muncy has been sidelined since the middle of May due to a right oblique strain but could return to the team in the near future. Manager Dave Roberts said the club could get back both Muncy and Tommy Edman in the next week.

In three games with Oklahoma City, Muncy has gone 3-for-10 with a double, RBI, walk and run scored across 11 plate appearances.

The Dodgers expect to activate Muncy off the 60-day injured list for their homestand.
