The Los Angeles Dodgers could not finish off a Freeway Series sweep, losing 13-5 to the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday afternoon at Dodger Stadium. The blowout came in Kyle Tucker’s return to the lineup and on a day when Mookie Betts received a scheduled day of rest.

Los Angeles entered the finale as heavy favorites, with betting markets and betting outlets such as Royalstiger Casino reflecting confidence in another home win. Instead, the Angels pounced early, controlled the game from the bottom of their lineup, and handed the Dodgers one of their more lopsided home losses of the season.

Tucker Returns, Hits Third Behind Stars

Kyle Tucker was back in the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup after sitting out Saturday’s win and immediately slotted into a premium run-producing role. Against the right-handed Jose Soriano, the Dodgers stacked their left-handed power by hitting Tucker third, directly behind Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman, forming one of the most dangerous top threes in baseball on paper.

Ohtani led off the Dodgers’ offense from the top spot, with Freeman continuing to occupy his familiar role near the top of the order. Tucker followed them in the three-hole, giving Los Angeles three elite hitters in succession. The alignment was designed to maximize traffic in front of Tucker and force the Angels to navigate a brutal stretch of the order several times through the game.

Tucker took quality at-bats and added presence in the middle of the field defensively, but the Dodgers never found the game-changing swing they needed. Angels pitchers worked carefully to the top of the order, mixed their looks effectively, and minimized damage when Ohtani and Freeman reached base. The result was a day when the lineup’s structure looked dangerous but did not translate into sustained offense.

Mookie Betts Gets Scheduled Rest

Mookie Betts’ absence stood out in a lineup card that still featured star power but missed its typical engine at the top. The Dodgers gave Betts a planned day off in the series finale, a decision that aligned with the broader goal of managing workload during a demanding stretch of the schedule.

Without Betts, the Dodgers shifted responsibilities at the top of the order to Ohtani and Freeman, with Tucker elevated into the three-spot. That adjustment kept multiple All-Stars in the primary on-base and run-production roles, but it changed the usual rhythm of the lineup. The Dodgers still scored five runs, yet they lacked their usual ability to apply constant pressure across all nine innings.

Manager Dave Roberts has consistently emphasized the importance of banking rest days for his core players during the regular season. Sunday’s configuration reflected that philosophy, even if the final result highlighted how much Betts’ presence normally helps extend innings and turn the lineup over.

Will Smith’s Neck Injury Remains A Factor

Will Smith’s status remained a key storyline as the Dodgers wrapped up the series. The All-Star catcher has been dealing with a neck issue that surfaced on Friday, and it continued to keep him out of the starting lineup through Sunday’s contest.

Smith’s absence forced the Dodgers to lean again on Dalton Rushing behind the plate. Rushing handled the bulk of the catching duties over the weekend and drew another start in the finale, tasked with both guiding a deep pitching staff and contributing offensively. While he offered energy and effort, losing Smith’s bat and game-calling experience was noticeable, especially in a game where the Angels consistently produced traffic and drove in runs from the bottom of their lineup.

The Dodgers have approached Smith’s situation cautiously, preferring to give the neck problem time to calm down rather than risk a setback. With the club facing a long stretch of games without many natural off days, how quickly Smith can return to regular catching duties will be crucial for both the rotation and bullpen.

Angels’ Offense Explodes At Dodger Stadium

The Angels’ lineup, particularly the lower third, was the difference in the 13-5 outcome. While the Dodgers came into the day having largely controlled the series, Sunday’s game flipped that script as the Angels repeatedly cashed in big opportunities.

The bottom portion of the Angels order delivered a relentless performance, stringing together hits, extending at-bats, and driving in runs in bunches. Backup catcher Sebastián Rivero led the surge with a standout game, piling up hits and RBI while setting the tone for an explosive day from the visitors. The Dodgers’ pitchers struggled to put hitters away, saw counts run deep, and paid for mistakes left over the plate.

Even with Ohtani, Freeman, and Tucker stacked at the top and producing some offense, the Dodgers could not keep up. Five runs normally keep them in most games, but on this day, the pitching staff did not provide the margin they needed. The Angels continued to tack on runs in the middle and late innings, turning the contest into a one-sided result well before the final out.

Dodgers Turn Page After Lopsided Loss

Despite Sunday’s setback, the Los Angeles Dodgers still came out of the Freeway Series with a winning result and reaffirmed their status near the top of the National League. The finale, however, underscored areas for refinement as they move deeper into the season.

Tucker’s return and immediate placement behind Ohtani and Freeman showed how the Dodgers envision their ideal top of the order when everyone is available. Getting Betts back in the lineup and Smith healthy behind the plate would give Los Angeles the full version of its roster, one built to string together dominant stretches even against quality opponents.

For now, the focus shifts to tightening execution on the mound, cleaning up the mistakes that extended innings, and turning the star-heavy top of the lineup into consistent early leads. If Smith’s neck improves and Tucker builds rhythm in the three-spot, the Dodgers will expect this kind of lopsided loss at Dodger Stadium to remain the exception, not the rule.
