The Los Angeles Dodgers snapped a seven-game losing streak on Saturday night with an extra innings win against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but getting to that point wasn’t easy.
The Dodgers’ offense scored just two runs in the game, and it required some phenomenal pitching to keep the Diamondbacks at bay. Unfortunately, it was Edwin Díaz who faltered again and blew his second save in as many nights, but he then locked in to prevent the game-winning run from scoring with a runner on third and no outs.
The Dodgers’ bullpen had to perform multiple Houdini acts to secure the win, and with that, they made some MLB history.
L.A. became the only MLB team in the last 50 years to win a game in which the final batter they faced in each of the last 6 innings came to the plate with multiple runners on base, with one of them being the potential go-ahead run, according to OptaSTATS.

That run of pitching started in the fifth inning with Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the mound. He allowed a leadoff single and then hit a batter with one out. With two runners on base, the right-hander bounced back to strike out the next two hitters.
In the sixth, Yamamoto allowed a leadoff single and walk before retiring the next two. Evan Phillips then took over and recorded a flyout to end the inning.
Alex Vesia started his inning out in the seventh by walking two of the first three batters he faced, and then finished off the inning with a popout and a strikeout.
Kyle Hurt recorded the first two batters in the eighth inning, but then allowed a single and walked the next two, loading the bases. Tanner Scott came in and recorded a lineout to finish off the inning.
After Díaz allowed back-to-back triples to start the ninth inning, which tied the game, he ended up recording the next two outs before issuing an intentional walk. Díaz stranded both runners, getting a strikeout to finish off the inning.
Then, in the 10th with the free runner on base, the D-Backs picked up a one-out single that put runners at the corners. Jack Dreyer then recorded a double play to finish off the game and pick up his first save of the season.
During the game, the Diamondbacks went 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position against the Dodgers’ pitchers and stranded 15 on base.
Dodgers ended franchise blown lead streak
Before picking up the win on Saturday, the Dodgers had seven consecutive blown lead losses for the first time in franchise history.
Before that stretch, they had six straight blown-lead losses on three different occasions in history, most recently on July 18-24, 1987, against the Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, and Chicago Cubs.
