Dodgers News: James Outman Focused On Adding Muscle During Offseason Workouts

After a solid rookie campaign in 2023, James Outman was unable to achieve similar results for the Los Angeles Dodgers last year.

He entered the 2024 season as the team’s starting center fielder but lost his role after failing to find any success. Outman hit just .147 with four homers and 11 RBI in 53 games at the big league level.

The 27-year-old made some changes to his offseason routine and is looking forward to getting back on track. “A fresh start will be nice, for sure,” Outman said during DodgerFest.

“I think I had a lot more intent and focus this offseason. I put on, like, five pounds of muscle, which was hard for me to do. I felt like I kind of got back to my old school training. Just trying to not listen to my body as much and work harder. That’s kind of been the focus this offseason. I’m excited coming it. It’s going to be a fun year.”

Outman still isn’t sure what caused him to struggle last season but is confident he will be able to bounce back. “I think part of it is the nature of the game,” Outman began.

“You’re going to have good years and bad years. I couldn’t really pinpoint what it was. Just kind of went back to the drawing board and put my nose in the grindstone. If I knew, I probably would’ve fixed it a lot earlier.”

Outman was able to put on five pounds of muscle this offseason by changing his diet.

“I was eating a lot of meat. Eating a lot of protein,” he said. “I was just trying to move more weight, honestly. That was the biggest thing. A shorter offseason, so that time to build up your body is condensed. I just tried moving more weight sooner.”

James Outman seeing improved results

Outman has already participated in some workouts at Camelback Ranch and is seeing improved results with his hitting.

“Yeah, I guess,” Outman answered when asked if he feels a difference with his added muscle. “I feel the benefits of Camelback Ranch with that lab that we have. It’s been great working out there. You just have so much technology there. Not that I’m using it every day, but you’ve got a lot of stuff and a lot of staff to help you work smartly.”

With Tommy Edman slated to receive the majority of opportunities in center field. Outman will likely open the 2025 season with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

However, he is essentially a lock to see time in the Majors this year because of his ability to play all three outfield positions and presence on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster.
