The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Chayce McDermott and Paul Gervase from Triple-A Oklahoma City, optioned Charlie Barnes and placed Jack Dreyer on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder discomfort prior to Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels.
Dreyer’s injury comes as a surprise, but he joins a growing list of pitchers who have been placed on the IL recently. The 27-year-old is in his second season with the Dodgers.
Dreyer is 2-1 with a 2.08 ERA in 20 games while striking out 24 batters in 21.2 innings with a 0.97 WHIP. He has not allowed a run since April 22, tossing 11.1 scoreless innings in that span.
Barnes returns to the Minors two days after he was added to the Dodgers roster. That came in response to Blake Snell landing on the 15-day injured list because of loose bodies in his left elbow, and the Dodgers needing to rely on a bullpen game in the opener of the Freeway Series.
Barnes pitched the ninth inning on consecutive days for the Dodgers. Saturday was Barnes’ first appearance at any level in the Dodgers organization since being claimed off waivers from the Chicago Cubs.
The left-hander went 3-1 with a 3.04 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in seven games (four starts) for Triple-A Iowa Cubs this year.
Dodgers get fresh bullpen arms
Gervase returns for his second stint with the Dodgers after appearing in one game and tossing three innings of one-run ball on May 9 against the Atlanta Braves.
The right-hander has gone 2-0 with a 5.14 ERA in 10 games for the Comets this season. He has appeared in seven Major League games in his career, posting a 3.97 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 11.1 innings.
The Dodgers acquired Gervase prior to the trade deadline last season, but he did not get any extended opportunity with the club despite their need for bullpen help.
Still, the 6-foot, 10-inch pitcher has some encouraging upside.
The Dodgers acquired McDermott one month ago in a trade that sent Axel Perez to the Baltimore Orioles.
McDermott was assigned to the Oklahoma City Comets and pitched to a 4.32 ERA over eight appearances prior to getting called up.
McDermott has prior MLB experience, making his MLB debut with the Orioles in 2024, though he started only one game. McDermott was briefly with Baltimore last year as well, pitching in four games (one start).
The right-hander is a combined 0-1 with a 12.79 ERA and 2.45 WHIP in the five career Major League games.
McDermott emerged as one of the top Orioles pitching prospects in 2023, when he had a combined 3.10 ERA for Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk. McDermott then went 4-5 and sported a 3.78 ERA across 22 games (21 starts) at the Triple-A level.
But that was followed by regression last year, as McDermott pitched to a 6.91 ERA through his first 11 starts in Triple-A. Included in that stretch was allowing six home runs and walking 36 batters in 43 innings pitched.
That prompted a move to the bullpen, and McDermott settled in after allowing five runs in his first relief appearance. He went on to have a 1.76 ERA over his next 14 games out of the bullpen.
However, that trajectory did not change after joining the Orioles in the middle of September, as McDermott allowed four runs in both relief appearances.
Now he’s a fresh arm for the Dodgers bullpen as they still have four more games remaining before an off day. The 27-year-old was among multiple pitchers OKC Comets broadcaster Alex Freedman mentioned during an exclusive interview with DodgerBlue.com.
