Dodgers Injury Updates: Tommy Edman & Edwin Díaz

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been plagued by injuries this season, but several key players could potentially be back sooner rather than later.

Tommy Edman, who has missed the entire year while recovering from offseason right ankle surgery, recently began a rehab assignment and could return to the team later this month.

Edwin Díaz has also resumed baseball activities after undergoing surgery on April 22 to remove loose bodies from his right elbow. The three-time All-Star recently advanced to throwing and remains on track to rejoin the Dodgers sometime after the All-Star break.

Dodgers injury updates

Tommy Edman

Edman is expected to spend the maximum 20 days on his Minor League rehab assignment, where he will play multiple positions. He has gone 6-for-16 (.375) with one home run and two RBI in five rehab games for Triple-A Oklahoma City so far.

“He’s good,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said on SportsNet LA. “I still think it’s going to be the full three weeks for Tommy. But he’s going to play second, I think, tomorrow. Then he’ll kick over to third, and then play a little bit of left, play some center. So I think the lion’s share will be second, though.”

Edman’s versatility will be important when he returns to the Dodgers, as the team is currently thin in left field and at second base. L.A. has navigated the situation by relying on its depth, with Ryan Ward, Alex Call, and Alex Freeland getting extended playing time.

Edwin Díaz

Díaz has ramped up his throwing program this week, which included getting loose on back-to-back days.

“He is on his second set of back-to-backs,” Roberts said. “He’s at Dodger Stadium today and playing catch, so it’s coming along really well, very encouraged.”

Díaz, who recently reached 10 years of Major League service time, is still projected to be sidelined until the second half of the season.

“Obviously, full recovery, still don’t know when the time of return is. I mean, it’s easy, probably to assume it’s after the All-Star break, but I just have no idea,” Roberts said.

Díaz struggled to the tune of a 10.50 ERA, 4.90 FIP, 2.33 WHIP and four saves in six innings across seven appearances with the Dodgers before landing on the injured list. Tanner Scott has primarily handled ninth-inning duties in his absence.
