Los Angeles Dodgers pitching prospect River Ryan was placed on the Minor League seven-day injured list earlier this month due to hamstring trouble, which came after he got scratched from a scheduled start for Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes said Ryan has already resumed throwing, but there is no timeline for when he will return to game action, via Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group.
Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes said the injury is not considered serious and Ryan has already resumed throwing.
“Somebody who is that talented, that young, coming off (Tommy John) surgery, we’re going to be prudent in the build-up and make sure we err on the side of caution rather than just ramping him back up to say, ‘Oh, River’s back at four innings and is an option.’ We’re just not gonna do that. So he’s progressing well coming off the hamstring tweak.”
Ryan made two starts for Oklahoma City before going on the IL. He allowed five runs (two earned) and collected 10 strikeouts against two walks in seven innings of work.
Ryan is in his first season since missing all of last year while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He impressed during Spring Training but was optioned to Triple-A to begin the season.
The Dodgers figure to call on Ryan at some point later in the year as they look to keep their group of starters feeling fresh heading into the postseason. He went 1-0 with a 1.33 ERA and 1.18 WHIP across four starts in 2024 before suffering his right elbow injury that ultimately required surgery.
Gavin Stone update
Gomes also provided an update on Gavin Stone, who has resumed throwing bullpen sessions after being limited to just one Cactus League start due to right shoulder discomfort.
Gomes said Stone has resumed throwing bullpen sessions.
“Velocity is tracking well,” Gomes said. “Glad to see Gavin back at it. We know how hard he’s worked over the last year-plus. So he’s feeling good and trending in the right direction.”
Stone is looking to return after missing all of last year while recovering from right shoulder surgery. He last pitched 140.1 innings during the 2024 season, finishing with a 3.53 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 116 strikeouts in what became a breakout season.
