Dodgers Injury Updates: J.D. Martinez & Julio Urías

Both J.D. Martinez and Julio Urías are dealing with injuries despite neither being placed on the injured list to this point, but the Los Angeles Dodgers did receive some positive news on each of them.

Martinez was in the Dodgers lineup on Sunday for the series finale against the Cincinnati Reds, but didn’t take an at-bat before getting pinch-hit for by Chris Taylor. The Dodgers announced Martinez was removed from the game due to left hamstring tightness, and he was set to undergo testing with a concern he may end up on the 10-day IL.

As for Urías, he last pitched on July 25 and was lined up to start Tuesday against the Oakland Athletics, but the Dodgers pushed his start back due to a cracked fingernail on his throwing hand.

The issue was not expected to keep Urías out for the long-term, but it’s something he had to labor through in his previous outing.

Martinez, who has twice dealt with left hamstring tightness recently, underwent a scan which determined there’s nothing new that has come up. He is currently day-to-day and the expectation is he avoids the IL, Roberts said.

The designated hitter has also expressed confidence he’s improved since Sunday, but the Dodgers are still cautious of preventing a long-term injury and making sure nothing else comes up.

“I think to say that there’s no concern, would be putting your head in the sand,” Roberts said. “So I think for us, it’s just doing what we can to manage. I think we’ve done a good job of managing it. He played Saturday, and 10 minutes before the game on Sunday, he couldn’t move. So I don’t know what else we can do. But to say it’s not concerning, yeah, it is.”

It’s still possible Martinez does end up on the IL after a few days of rest, but early indications are trending against that.

Julio Urías

Urías tested his fingernail issue during a bullpen session Tuesday, and things are going well for the left-hander, who is still scheduled to make his start on Thursday.

“It went well,” Roberts said. “So as of now, we expect him to make that start on Thursday.”
