The Los Angeles Dodgers are getting close to having a fully healthy roster, and it’s coming at a perfect time as they continue their push to win the National League West division.
Hyeseong Kim and Michael Kopech are both expected to return in the coming days, and the Dodgers also recently activated Kiké Hernández.
In addition, Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates returned to help boost the Dodgers’ bullpen.
The Dodgers are confident their players coming back will be major additions to the club, and it’s part of the reason they had a mostly quiet trade deadline.
Next up for the Dodgers is getting Max Muncy and Tommy Edman back, while things are trending up for Freddie Freeman and Alex Call after they missed games with respective injuries.
Dodgers updates
Freddie Freeman
Freeman was out of the lineup on Wednesday due to a neck stinger that went from his neck and into his shoulder on the right side. Freeman returned to the lineup on Friday, but the Dodgers will keep an eye on him.
“From what I understand, he feels a lot better,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “There’s still some kind of lingering effects, but nothing compromising. It is something that we’ll keep an eye on day-to-day, but I feel confident that he can get through it and won’t have any setbacks.”
Freeman isn’t expected to miss a game, but the Dodgers have an off day coming up, which they feel will be beneficial as well.
“So yeah, if we can get him through the series, get the day off on Monday, then hopefully that will work,” Roberts mentioned.
Tommy Edman
Edman is recovering from a sprained right ankle that has cost him nearly a month on the IL. The utilityman took live batting practice for the first time on Friday.
Edman’s at-bats were against Logan Lunceford and Jacob Frost, a pair of 2025 Dodgers draft picks.
“I thought fine,” Roberts said about how Edman fared. “It’s good to get some guys here to throw. I thought right-handed was better than left-handed, but not kind of reading too much into either right now.
“But he’s going to go through a regular day, so encouraging. And encouraged by how his body feels right now.”
Edman was limited in his mobility work last week, but that seems to be a hurdle he’s cleared and has no restrictions now.
“I think he’s not restricted with anything,” Roberts noted. “I think it’s just more of the workload, as far as making sure that when you get some fatigue running around, that we don’t go backwards.
“And that’s kind of the only thing with any injury where you’re afraid to let them go completely, because you want to make sure that all the boxes are checked. And I guess the last box is you go hard and you come back, and you’re not sore anymore.
“So I think that a couple days ago, maybe three days ago, he went really hard, and then the next day he was a little bit sore. So that’s saying that you’re just not quite there yet. But the live at-bats, and hopefully next week we can send him out on a rehab assignment. That’d be great.”
Max Muncy
Max Muncy has been on the injured list due to a Grade 1 right oblique strain he suffered in the middle August. Muncy has since progressed well, and he was expected to hit BP on Friday and start a rehab assignment this weekend.
But Muncy didn’t begin either due to an illness.
“Max had a little kind of something with congestion or not feeling good, chest cold, something like that,” Roberts said. “So we sent him home. He’s going to get on some velo on Sunday on the field. “And then hopefully we can get Max out on rehab next week as well. So if we could get he and Tommy out, that’d be great.”
The hope was Muncy would be back when the Dodgers begin their roadtrip on Thursday, but that has since been delayed.
“Pushes it back a little bit,” Roberts said. “But I’m still holding out hope that Baltimore is still alive, but we’ll see.”
Alex Call
Call was dealing with a Sacroiliac issue affecting his lower back since Tuesday. Call had not played since then, but did pinch-hit and remain in the game in left field on Friday night. The hope is he gets back in the lineup on Saturday.
