Dodgers Injury Updates: Andrew Heaney, Blake Treinen & Tommy Kahnle

The Los Angeles Dodgers pitching has been a strongpoint for the team this season, which has come despite recent injuries to Andrew Heaney and Blake Treinen, among others.

Heaney was placed on the 10-day injured list April 20 because of left shoulder discomfort. Treinen followed suit two days later due to discomfort in his right shoulder. Both IL stints were backdated and returns to the active roster were expected to come relatively quickly.

However, neither Heaney nor Treinen has been able to resume playing catch, much less throw off a mound.

“I don’t know the next time they’ll pick up a ball or be back with us,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Friday. “I think early on we were hopeful that both guys would be more shorter than longer, but as it’s turned out, both are on the more longer side of things.”

Heaney and Treinen have each undergone an MRI during their time on the IL. “It was more shoulder inflammation on Andrew,” Roberts said. “On Blake, I know it was shoulder but don’t know the exact diagnosis.”

Heaney began to experience shoulder soreness the day after throwing six shutout innings and collecting 11 strikeouts against the Cincinnati Reds on April 17. He’s yet to allow a run over 10.1 innings across two starts this season, and has been replaced in the rotation by Tyler Anderson.

Treinen initially was expected to avoid the IL after being given an opportunity to rest during the Atlanta Braves series. He last appeared in a game on April 14, throwing 18 pitches over a scoreless inning.

Roberts added Treinen currently was on paternity leave.

Kahnle on verge of joining Dodgers

While Heaney and Treinen figure to be at least one week away from returning, the Dodgers remain on track to activate Tommy Kahnle off the 10-day IL for the San Francisco Giants series next week.

Kahnle signed with the Dodgers in December 2020, but spent all of 2021 recovering from Tommy John surgery. He just cleared the hurdle of pitching on back-to-back nights as part of a rehab assignment with Low-A Rancho Cucamonga, and now is scheduled to make a final appearance.
