Dodgers Injury Update: Tyler Glasnow Suffers ‘Setback’ Due To Elbow Discomfort

Tyler Glasnow has been making progress in his return to the Los Angeles Dodgers, but that is now on hold.

Glasnow first went on the 15-day injured list due to right elbow tendinitis on Aug. 16, but the Dodgers believed he would not be out long.

That plan ended up changing as Glasnow did not resume throwing as quickly as hoped and still felt some discomfort after playing catch, which further delayed his timeline.

Despite the delays, Glasnow started to ramp up his return recently and was scheduled to face hitters on Friday in a simulated game.

However, after warming up Glasnow did not face hitters, which Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed was due to a setback, via Jack Harris of the L.A. Times:

Glasnow previously threw two bullpen sessions, including one where he used all his pitches. He also expressed confidence after the bullpen and believed he was on the right track to returning.

The right-hander’s sim game was expected to be two or three innings, and they hoped that would lead to him being able to skip a rehab assignment and return to the rotation.

Roberts previously said Glasnow would need a rehab assignment after his first delay.

“To get him in a Major League game is a priority,” Roberts said of the change in planning. “So if he can manage two or three innings in a sim game, I think that will be sufficient.”

Will Tyler Glasnow return to the Dodgers in 2024?

Glasnow’s status is now very much up in the air. It’s become far more unlikely that he will be able to return in the regular season with just 16 games remaining.

However, additional testing is required to determine his next steps.

The best-case scenario may be Glasnow shutting down his throwing for a few days and still coming back before the season ends, but not returning this year or making a comeback sometime in the playoffs are both possibilities.

Without Glasnow, the Dodgers have Jack Flaherty and Yoshinobu Yamamoto lined up as their top two starters, and they’ll have to figure out the best mix of their remaining options that don’t inspire much confidence.
