The Los Angeles Dodgers have been bit by the injury bug over the past week, with the likes of Gavin Lux, Tony Gonsolin and Justin Bruihl affected.

Lux represented the most significant injury, as he underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn ACL and LCL in his right knee. Lux is expected to miss the entire 2023 regular season.

Meanwhile, Bruihl came out of his relief appearance against the San Diego Padres due to back spasms. Earlier that morning, Gonsolin suffered a sprained left ankle while walking off the field during a workout.

Manager Dave Roberts initially expressed optimism that Gonsolin suffered a minor injury, but now has acknowledged the right-hander may not recover in time to be included on the Dodgers Opening Day roster, according to
Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic:

Tony Gonsolin’s ankle is still “tender,” Dave Roberts said. X-rays came back clean for any fracture. But Roberts said he “doesn’t feel good” about Gonsolin being ready for Opening Day. Still day to day.

Gonsolin has started just one Cactus League game this spring, which saw him throw 2.1 scoreless innings against the Los Angeles Angels. He got through the outing unscathed despite allowing three hits and issuing two walks.

Aside from needing to adjust to the new MLB pitch timer, Gonsolin was generally pleased with his outing and more importantly, being healthy after dealing with right forearm trouble late last season.

“Fairly normal winter. I knew what to expect going into a season, having thrown as many innings as I did last year,” Gonsolin said. “So I had a better understanding of what I was preparing for. So I came into this Spring Training feeling strong and ready to go.”

How would Dodgers replace Tony Gonsolin?

Should Gonsolin not be part of the Dodgers’ Opening Day rotation, that would create an opportunity for Michael Grove or Ryan Pepiot to fill in.

Both have started for the Dodgers in Spring Training games thus far, with Grove taking the mound Wednesday night in Gonsolin’s place.
