Dodgers Injury Update: Tommy Edman Likely Unavailable For Opening Day

After dealing with right ankle trouble over parts of the last two seasons, Tommy Edman underwent a debridement procedure in effort to find a solution for the nagging injury.

Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes said earlier this offseason that Edman would be limited at the start of Spring Training but wasn’t concerned about his availability for the regular season.

Edman is still recovering from the operation and now appears likely to miss Opening Day, via Katie Woo of The Athletic:

Edman will be delayed in starting the spring as he recovers from a right ankle operation. There is a growing likelihood he will not be ready for Opening Day.

Edman is expected to receive most of his opportunities at second base this season but will also occasionally play center field.

If he is sidelined to begin the 2026 season as expected, Andy Ibáńez and Miguel Rojas figure to split the reps at second base. Andy Pages will also be the primary center fielder until Edman returns.

Edman was limited to just 97 games last season and primarily played second base as the Dodgers looked to manage the health of his troublesome right ankle.

Despite missing stretches of time, Edman tied a career high with 13 home runs and finished with 49 RBI, which were the third-most he’s had in a season.

Tommy Edman encouraged with recovery from ankle surgery

Edman previously shared that his procedure went well and expects to return to full health next year, even if it’s a little later than he would have hoped.

Prior to having right ankle surgery, Edman was able to enjoy some semblance of a normal offseason and receive recognition as a two-time World Series champion.
