The Los Angeles Dodgers are set to get back several key contributors in the next few weeks, including Kiké Hernández, who began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday.
Hernández started at designated hitter and batted second for the Comets, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double. He also was in the lineup on Thursday and Friday as well.
The utility man might make a couple more appearances at the Minor League level before rejoining the Dodgers. Manager Dave Roberts said Hernández “probably” will return at some point during the Dodgers’ series against the Cincinnati Reds that begins Monday.
When he does return, Roberts said Hernández will receive some starts in left field as the Dodgers look for more production from the position amid Michael Conforto’s season-long struggles.
The Dodgers have been without Hernández since the middle of July because of left elbow inflammation. He was initially projected to return shortly after the All-Star break, but the injury lingered longer than expected.
Hernández underwent nonsurgical procedures, which sped up his progress and allowed him to begin hitting again. Hernández’s imminent return will boost a Dodgers infield that is currently without Max Muncy, Tommy Edman and Hyeseong Kim.
Though, Kim has also started a rehab assignment with the Comets and could be back late next week. Meanwhile, Muncy and Edman don’t figure to return to the Dodgers until September.
Kiké Hernández’s 2025 season
Hernández is in the midst of an overall down year as he’s batting just .195/.259/.367 with five doubles, eight home runs and 22 RBI across 186 plate appearances (71 games).
Hernández nevertheless has continued to provide value with his versatility, appearing at six different positions this season.
