Gavin Stone was among the Los Angeles Dodgers’ most effective pitchers in 2024, but unfortunately, he was also one of the many that suffered an injury.

Stone first landed on the 15-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation in early September and he was shut down from throwing for at least 10 days.

He was scheduled to throw again over the weekend of Sept. 14-15, which gave some optimism he would be back for the postseason.

However, as of Wednesday, Sept. 18, Stone has still not started throwing, which means he probably isn’t going to pitch again in 2024, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said via Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic:

While there was some hope, albeit slim, that Stone would be back for the playoffs, he and the Dodgers needed everything in his rehab process to be checked without any setbacks. That has not been the case, so the Dodgers will proceed without him.

Prior to landing on the IL, Stone was the only member of the Dodgers rotation to not miss a start, but he set a career-high in innings pitched.

Stone’s season likely ends with him going 11-5 with a 3.53 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 25 starts this season. The right-hander endured a rough outing his last time pitching, allowing five runs over five innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Stone reported feeling right shoulder discomfort after that outing, which prompted the move to the injured list.

Dodgers rotation options without Gavin Stone

The Dodgers’ rotation options continue to thin out with Stone now likely joining Glasnow among the players out for the rest of the season.

Clayton Kershaw is an option to potentially return, but his status remains up in the air as well.

The Dodgers are currently relying on a rotation that includes Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Jack Flaherty, Walker Buehler and Landon Knack with no one in the fifth spot after Bobby Miller was optioned to Triple-A.

Tony Gonsolin could make his way back to fill a spot on the roster, but he also remains unlikely.

Outside of them, Justin Wrobleski, Ben Casparius and Zach Logue are the only other options with starting experience on the 40-man roster that are healthy.
