The Los Angeles Dodgers have dealt with injuries to their pitching staff all year long. Some of that injury luck has improved lately, with every member of the team’s opening day starting rotation besides Hyun-Jin Ryu currently healthy.
However, the Dodgers’ bullpen is missing three key relief pitchers. Tony Cingrani is suffering from a left shoulder strain that may have caused some loss in pitch velocity. Pedro Baez has biceps tendinitis in his throwing arm, the same injury that sidelined Clayton Kershaw earlier this season.
Josh Fields is the most recent member of the pitching staff to go down. Fields is dealing with right shoulder inflammation.
Ryu, Cingrani, Baez and Fields have all been rehabbing at Dodger Stadium during the current homestand. They will move to the Dodgers’ Camelback Ranch Spring Training facility when the team hits the road though to begin rehab assignments, per Kaelen Jones of MLB.com:
Left-handers Hyun-Jin Ryu (left groin strain) and Tony Cingrani (left shoulder strain), as well as right-handers Pedro Baez (right biceps tendinitis) and Josh Fields (right shoulder inflammation), are set to join the Dodgers’ Arizona Summer League affiliate during the Major League club’s upcoming road trip.
It is unknown when any of them will actually take the mound, although them heading to Arizona to ramp up their rehab has to be a good sign.
With the All-Star break just around the corner, both the Dodgers starting rotation and bullpen could be getting some reinforcements in the coming weeks, which could change how the team’s front office approaches the trade deadline this year.
Ryu was in the midst of a career year before going down with the injury, and given that he is not comfortable pitching in the bullpen, another starter may have to make that move when he returns.
