The Los Angeles Dodgers made a trade just before the waiver deadline on Friday night, acquiring infielder David Freese from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for Minor Leaguer Jesus Manuel Valdez.

With rosters set to expand to 40 on Saturday, the Dodgers will not have to make a move to get Freese on the active roster. They did have to make one to add him to their 40-man roster, however, and they transferred reliever Erik Goeddel to the 60-day disabled list.

Goeddel is dealing with elbow inflammation that he missed time with at the end of July and beginning of August before returning and tossing 1.1 shutout innings on Aug. 15 against the San Francisco Giants.

Goeddel made just that one appearance before landing back on the disabled list with the elbow issue. Given that his disabled list stint is retroactive to Aug. 17, Goeddel will not be eligible to return until the middle of October, so his 2018 season is essentially over.

It is still unclear how serious the elbow injury is, but he should be back in the mix to earn a spot in the bullpen next spring.

Overall in 31 appearances this season between the Dodgers and Mariners, Goeddel posted a 2.95 ERA, 3.90 FIP and 1.26 WHIP. He collected 44 strikeouts against 20 walks in 36.2 innings. In 26 games with the Dodgers, Goeddel pitched to a 3.38 ERA and 1.26 WHIP after being acquired off waivers.
