Dodgers Injury Updates: Julio Urías, Ryan Pepiot, Dustin May & Daniel Hudson

The Los Angeles Dodgers pitching staff has been plagued by injuries throughout the season, with several notable contributors missing a significant amount of time.

The starting rotation in particular has been hit hard, with Walker Buehler, Dustin May, Ryan Pepiot, Noah Syndergaard and Julio Urías among those currently on the injured list.

The Dodgers bullpen has been affected as well, with Phil Bickford, Tyler Cyr, J.P. Feyereisen, Daniel Hudson, Jimmy Nelson, Alex Reyes and Blake Treinen all out for the time being. Alex Reyes recently underwent season-ending surgery on his right shoulder.

However, a few of the aforementioned names are getting closer to returning to the Dodgers, while others still have a ways to go before they rejoin the team.

Dodgers injuries

Julio Urías

Urías was expected to return from the 15-day injured list and start against the Philadelphia Phillies this past Sunday, but those plans changed when he suffered a setback after a bullpen session.

The left-hander threw off flat ground on Tuesday but it remains to be seen when he will have his next bullpen session.

“You know, we were kind of just talking about trying to figure out when we can get him off the mound,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Urías.

“And clearly today he just kind of stretched out, but the effort was really good. So that’s a good thing. I don’t know when he’s going to get back on the mound though, I don’t.”

Urías will need to complete a rehab assignment before rejoining the Dodgers, which could ultimately take more than one start.

“Obviously the floor is one outing, but to think that he can’t get up to five (innings) and 75 (pitches) to come back and pitch for us, I think is a fair take given the length of time he’s going to be out,” Roberts said.

Ryan Pepiot

Pepiot, who has missed the entire 2023 season so far because of a left oblique strain, is not close to resuming baseball activities. “I don’t think he’s picked up a baseball yet,” Roberts said.

“I think he was getting better, and then there’s still something there with the oblique, the rib. We’re a ways out.”

Dustin May

May received a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection to treat his right elbow strain last month and still isn’t close to throwing again. “I haven’t,” Roberts answered when asked if he has heard anything new on May.

“I know it’s probably a week out until we see if that PRP takes, where he can pick up a baseball. But I don’t know when that’s going to happen.”

Daniel Hudson

Hudson, who started a rehab assignment this month, continues making progress and is on track to rejoin the Dodgers in the next couple of weeks. “He’s good. Huddy’s good. It’s been really good,” Roberts said.

“I think he’s getting very anxious. I think a couple weeks, but I don’t want to put him in a corner. I know he’s going to get here as soon as he can. Once he does get here, he’s going to make us better. Getting another high-leverage guy that’s been there, will make us better.”

Hudson is expected to move his rehab assignment from the Arizona Complex League to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
