Tyler Glasnow was scratched from his scheduled start against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday due to back tightness.
The hope was Glasnow would be back within a few days and he would start early next week. But the Dodgers also sent him to undergo additional testing in the meantime.
It’s not the first time Glasnow has dealt with back issues as he missed three weeks due to back tightness last season, so it certainly made sense to proceed with an abundance of caution.
After meeting with the doctors in Los Angeles, the Dodgers’ confidence that Glasnow will be able to pitch in the coming days was validated, via Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group:
“He went and saw the docs back in Los Angeles, and nothing came of it,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “So I think we dodged a bullet. He was playing catch today. So we expect to pencil him in soon. But we dodged a bullet, so we feel good about that.”
The 32-year-old already spent a significant amount of time this season on the injured list due to right shoulder inflammation. Another injury this late in the season would almost certainly put Glasnow’s postseason outlook in jeopardy.
Glasnow is coming off a strong start where he took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. He ended up losing that and a potential scoreless outing, but still finished with seven innings pitched, allowing three runs on four hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
Glasnow had made nine starts since being activated from the 60-day IL on July 9, posting a 3.02 ERA and racking up 58 strikeouts in 50.2 innings. Overall, he’s made 14 starts this year with a 3.41 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and 81 strikeouts in 68.2 innings pitched.
When will Tyler Glasnow pitch?
Following their series finale with the Orioles on Sunday, the Dodgers return home for a short three-game homestand against the Colorado Rockies.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was hopeful Glasnow would go in the series opener on Monday, but it’s not yet clear if that will be feasible. Nevertheless, the expectation is Glasnow pitches during the homestand.
It might be more likely that the Dodgers move Sheehan up to the series opener and slot Glasnow in on Tuesday.
