In the time since the Los Angeles Dodgers won their second consecutive World Series title, both Kiké Hernández and Tommy Edman underwent offseason surgery.
Hernández had an extensor repair for a left elbow injury suffered during the season that nearly prevented him from returning. Although Hernández is expected to make a full recovery, he will have a delayed start to the 2026 season and it could impact free agency.
Meanwhile, Edman had surgery to address his balky right ankle.
During an appearance on ESPN LA radio’s “The Sedano and Kap Morning Show,” Edman shared the procedure went well and too should return to full health next year:
“It’s doing all right. I recently got the surgery, so hoping that fixes it for good. It’s something I needed to do after dealing with it the past two seasons. They said everything went smooth. Hopefully it’s a good recovery and I get back to 100%.”
Prior to having right ankle surgery, Edman was able to enjoy some semblance of a normal offseason and receive recognition as a two-time World Series champion.
He participated in pregame festivities at SoFi Stadium prior to watching the Los Angeles Chargers host the Pittsburgh Steelers, and recently attended LEGOLAND California with his wife and son.
Tommy Edman’s ankle history
Edman first sprained his right ankle while on rehab assignment with the St. Louis Cardinals early last year. He was on the injured list at the time of being traded to the Dodgers.
Then this past season, Edman landed on the IL for the first time in early May due to an official designation of right ankle inflammation. That was a byproduct of spraining the ankle in a different area than his 2024 injury. Edman’s return was slightly delayed due to having trouble with advancing to running without discomfort.
Edman encountered more trouble in early June after tweaking his right ankle during a game against the New York Mets, but managed avoided the injured list.
Edman then aggravated his ankle while running the bases against the Boston Red Sox. He was a late scratch from the lineup on July 28 and couldn’t pinch-hit in a key situation that night. Though, Edman again managed to avoid going back on the injured list.
But that changed in August when a sprained right ankle forced Edman to the IL. The Dodgers decided to take a methodical approach at that point and did not rush to activate 30-year-old so that he could make a full recovery. Edman didn’t return until five weeks later.
The hope was that would allow for a full recovery that in turn made Edman available to play center field. He did play six games (five starts) at the position during the final month of the regular season but not again until three more contests in the World Series as the Dodgers erred on the side of caution.
