The Los Angeles Dodgers announced Gavin Stone underwent right shoulder surgery and isn’t expected to return until the 2026 season. Though, the same was said about Tony Gonsolin for this season, and he unexpectedly became a late candidate for the Dodgers postseason roster.
Details of Stone’s shoulder surgery were not provided, other than it was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Oct. 9. Stone joined River Ryan, Emmet Sheehan, Kyle Hurt and Dustin May as young Dodgers pitchers to have surgery this year.
Stone finished the regular season on the 15-day injured list because of right shoulder inflammation. The Dodgers put him on the injured list Sept. 6, and president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman immediately deemed Stone unlikely to pitch again this year.
Stone maintained hope of returning during the playoffs but was delayed in starting a throwing program. Any remote possibility of the 25-year-old making an impact for the Dodgers in October officially came to an end when Stone was transferred to the 60-day injured list Sept. 24.
That was done in part to create room for Edgardo Henriquez on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster. Ben Casparius was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City in order to add Henriquez to the active roster at the time.
Henriquez was included on the Dodgers’ playoff roster for the National League Division Series, and Casparius replaced an injured Michael Grove before Game 4.

Stone became an anchor for the Dodgers rotation as he went 11-5 with a 3.53 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 25 starts.
Stone had been the only member of the Dodgers’ Opening Day rotation to make every scheduled start this year before his stint on the injured list began.
The shoulder surgery creates another question for a 2026 Dodgers rotation that already wasn’t yet projecting to have much clarity.
