The majority of Los Angeles Dodgers injuries this season have impacted their pitching staff, but Austin Barnes is among a handful of position players who missed time as well.
Barnes again has another injury for the Dodgers to monitor as he was removed from Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves due to a left big toe contusion.
Barnes started at catcher and played four innings before he was pinch-hit for in the top of the fifth. On the surface that decision appeared to be tied to Barnes being hit in the left hand by a Jorge Soler swing, which was called for catcher interference, or Dodgers manager Dave Roberts looking to be aggressive.
Will Smith hit for Barnes with two runners on and nobody out in the fifth inning. The Braves held a 2-0 lead at the time, and remained ahead as Smith flied out.
Including Sunday, Barnes has appeared in 52 games (39 starts) and is batting .261/.327/.306 with three doubles, one home run and 11 RBI.
Austin Barnes’ toe injury
This is a second time Barnes is dealing with a left big toe issue as he previously fractured it nearly one month ago. Barnes sustained the toe fracture as a result of being hit by a pitch during a game against the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Dodgers placed him on the 10-day injured list and Barnes returned once he was eligible to be activated. Roberts indicated at the time his availability moving forward would be determined by managing and playing through the lingering pain.
Hunter Feduccia was recalled when the Dodgers put Barnes on the injured list, and could be in line to join the team once again.
