The Los Angeles Dodgers announced their initial player pool for summer camp and the 2020 season, which is comprised of a mixture of those on the 40-man roster, non-roster invitees to Spring Training and some of the organization’s top prospects.
For now the Dodgers only have 51 in their player pool. President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman had previously suggested the club would not fill all 60 slots.
“I guess first and foremost, as deep as we are and as excited as we are about our 26-man, 40-man and prospects behind it, we don’t have 60 guys that we feel like could step in and help us win a Major League game this year,” Friedman said last week.
“We may stagger it a little bit to buy some time, learn more and figure out which way we want to go with different things. So we’re going to try to make sure we balance depth and figuring out which of our prospects either need reps or pitchers that could really use some increase in workload, and just try to balance to make sure we’re protected and covered where we need to be but also a really good experience for some of our prospects.”
Pitchers Gerardo Carrillo, Josiah Gray, Michael Grove, Andre Jackson, Marshall Kasowski, Edwin Uceta, catchers Diego Cartaya and Rocky Gale, infielder Omar Estevez, and outfielders Zach Reks and Cody Thomas will report to the alternate training site.
The Dodgers are expected to hold that at USC before relocating to LoanMart Field once students begin arriving on campus.
Although reports indicated 2020 MLB Draft picks Bobby Miller and Landon Knack would be included, they were not part of the Dodgers’ announced player pool. The club has not confirmed that either signed, which would be the first step to either pitcher getting added to the group.
Only those included in the player pool are eligible to play this year. Of course, not every player will be added to the active roster. If a player is removed from the pool, they cannot be placed back in it.
