The Los Angeles Dodgers saw a rarity in Kenley Jansen blowing a save opportunity, leading to the Arizona Diamondbacks coming away with a walk-off win in 15 innings. At five hours and 46 minutes, the game was the longest in Chase Field history.
The Dodgers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, then led 6-3 before Jansen surrendered the game-tying home run with two outs in the ninth. Chris Owings’ blast came on the heels of Jansen issuing back-to-back walks.
As the game trudged through extra innings, both teams had their share of opportunities. Ketel Marte led off the bottom of the 14th with an infield single, and the Diamondbacks twice nearly ended the game after that.
The first instance was on a Paul Goldschmidt drive to right-center field that Yasiel Puig caught one step in front of the wall. Wilmer Font had seemingly tempted fate by giving Goldschmidt a steady dose of fastballs in the at-bat.
One batter later, A.J. Pollock put a charge into one that sent Puig to the warning track in the corner of right field. He made the catch, spun and fired a dart to get Marte on his tag attempt for an inning-ending double play.
Aside from generally proving to have a knack for making impressive plays in right field, Puig has prior history at Chase Field. Last season he robbed J.D. Martinez of a home run by making a leaping catch at the fence.
Impressive as Puig has been, he’s yet to win a Gold Glove Award. Though, Puig did take home a Wilson Defensive Player of the Year honor last season. He recently said winning a Gold Glove is not so much as a sliver of thought for him.
