Dodgers Highlights: Will Smith & Justin Turner Hit Home Runs Vs. Marlins

Dustin May enjoyed a successful first start back from Tommy John surgery and he was supported by home runs from Will Smith and Justin Turner in the 7-0 win over the Miami Marlins.

After Dustin May struck out his third batter to leave the bases loaded in the first inning, the Dodgers found immediate success against Marlins rookie Bryan Hoeing in his MLB debut. Following consecutive singles by Trea Turner and Freddie Freeman, Will Smith gave the Dodgers an early lead with a three-run home run.

Then three straight base hits from Mookie Betts, Turner and Freeman extended the Dodgers’ lead in the third. Justin Turner added to that and broke the game open with his own three-run homer before Hoeing could get through his final inning of work.

The run support certainly was beneficial for May, but he didn’t need most of it. The right-hander finished his start by retiring the final 13 batters faced. May got through five scoreless innings on 71 pitches, falling within the goal Dodgers manager Dave Roberts set before the game.

May finished with nine strikeouts, allowed only one hit and issued two walks.

His stellar performance was backed by more spotless work from the Dodgers bullpen. Caleb Ferguson, Chris Martin and Phil Bickford combined to toss four shutout innings. They allowed just two singles during that span.

Dodgers face Alcántara with chance to sweep Marlins

Next for the Dodgers is facing National League Cy Young Award favorite Sandy Alcántara, with a chance to complete a series sweep of the Marlins.
