The Los Angeles Dodgers closed out their seven-game road trip with Shohei Ohtani making MLB history in a 20-4 romping of the Miami Marlins to take the rubber match at loanDepot Park. It was their fifth consecutive game game with at least eight runs scored.

Ohtani got the Dodgers going early with a leadoff double and he later stole third base to give him 50 on the season. That in turn led to a run on Will Smith’s sacrifice fly.

Ohtani added onto his day with an RBI single in the second inning and he promptly stole his 51st base of the season.

After the Dodgers’ lead was cut in half, Gavin Lux and Andy Pages each drew a walk with the bases loaded in the third inning. Chris Taylor contributed with a sacrifice fly and Ohtani broke the game open with a two-run double.

Seemingly sensing his opportunity at hitting for the cycle, Ohtani attempted to stretch his drive to left-center field into a triple but was thrown out sliding into third base.

That became all the more relevant when Ohtani crushed his 49th home run in the sixth inning. That tied with Shawn Green for the Dodgers record of most home runs in a single season.

It also tied Ohtani with Rickey Henderson for the most games in a single season with at least one home run and one stolen base, with 13.

While Ohtani fell short of hitting for the cycle, he delivered an all-time record with his 50th home run. That put Ohtani in a group of his own as the first player to ever have 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in one season.

Ohtani further punctuated his day with a third home run to finish with his first career six-hit game.

Dodgers clinch postseason berth

With their win, the Dodgers guaranteed themselves a spot in the 2024 MLB postseason. While it remains mathematically possible that could come by way of being a Wild Card team, the Dodgers’ magic number to clinch the National League West is down to six.
