The Los Angeles Dodgers completed the first leg of final road trip before the All-Star break with a 4-0 shut out of the St. Louis Cardinals to take the three-game series at Busch Stadium. Wednesday marked the first time since July 7 the Dodgers didn’t play from behind.

The game was locked in a scoreless tie until Freddie Freeman helped spark the Dodgers with a one-out double in the fourth inning. Will Smith was hit by a pitch, and Justin Turner gave the Dodgers a lead with his RBI single.

They remained ahead 1-0 until Smith’s double scored Trea Turner from first base in the sixth inning. That gave Smith a sixth consecutive game with at least one RBI.

Gavin Lux provided the final bit of scoring for the Dodgers with a two-run home run in the seventh inning.

While Mookie Betts went 1-for-4 with a double, his biggest contributions came in right field. He first tracked down a fly ball in the gap to start the sixth inning and followed that by throwing out Dylan Carlson on his attempt to stretch a single into a double.

Betts’ throw to second base was accurate and on time despite double clutching upon fielding the ball hit down the line.

Tyler Anderson leads strong Dodgers pitching

Betts’ defensive plays provided some aid, but Tyler Anderson otherwise held the Cardinals to just three hits and two walks over six scoreless innings. He worked out of trouble in the fourth inning after a walk and base hit put two on with nobody out.

Anderson (10-1) and Tony Gonsolin (11-0) made the Dodgers the first team with two pitchers to win at least 10 games this season.

Anderson’s strong effort was backed by one scoreless inning each from Yency Almonte, Evan Phillips and Craig Kimbrel.
