Dodgers Highlights: Mookie Betts, Jason Heyward, Max Muncy & Miguel Vargas Lead Offense Against Cardinals

After two straight losses, the Los Angeles Dodgers got themselves back in the win column by defeating the St. Louis Cardinals to begin their homestand.

From the start, it didn’t look like an ideal night for the Dodgers. Dustin May battled through command issues, which allowed the Cardinals to take a 2-0 lead before L.A. got a chance to hit.

But from there on out, it was all Dodgers. Mookie Betts hit his 38th career leadoff home run, to cut the Cardinals lead to one run.

Will Smith then reached on a force out following a walk by Freddie Freeman, and Max Muncy took a free pass of his own to give the Dodgers a runner in scoring position. Jason Heyward then tied the game with a single through the right side of the infield.

In the third inning, the Cardinals threatened to score with two walks, but Heyward made a diving catch to keep the score tied and rob Nolan Arenado of a hit.

Freeman singled in the bottom of the third inning before Muncy hit his first double of the year to put the Dodgers up 3-2. Heyward then picked up his second hit of the night with a double of his own to drive in Muncy.

The Dodgers rallied again in the fifth inning when Smith singled, Muncy walked and Heyward reached on catcher’s interference. James Outman was then hit in the foot by a pitch to put the Dodgers up 5-2.

Following a walk from Trayce Thompson with one out in the seventh, the Dodgers added insurance runs when Miguel Vargas blasted his first long ball of the season.

The Cardinals scored one more run in the ninth inning, but their comeback effort ended there with the Dodgers picking up a 7-3 victory.

Dustin May ties career high in wins

Although May didn’t have his sharpest outing, he still pitched five innings while giving up just two runs to earn the third win of his season, which tied his career-high total set during the 2020 season.

Following May, Caleb Ferguson pitched a perfect sixth before Victor Gonzalez and Brusdar Graterol combined for a scoreless inning.

Shelby Miller held the Cardinals hitless in the eighth inning, but Alex Vesia’s struggles continued when he gave up one run in the ninth while allowing two hits and one walk.
