Dodgers Highlights: Mookie Betts Home Run, Tony Gonsolin Pitches Well Against Diamondbacks

The Los Angeles Dodgers made four outs on the bases but still managed to come away with a 3-2 win that has them in position to complete another four-game series sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Like he has so often throughout the past month, Mookie Betts again got the Dodgers started. He sent Merrill Kelly’s first pitch to the opposite field for a 32nd career leadoff home run, of which 12 have come with the Dodgers.

Tony Gonsolin retired the side in order in the first inning but allowed the Diamondbacks to take lead in the second behind RBI triples from Jake McCarthy and Geraldo Perdomo. That was all Gonsolin allowed as he got through six innings.

It represented Gonsolin’s first time in his career completing six innings in three consecutive starts.

In five starts during May, Gonsolin went 4-0 with a 1.93 ERA and 0.79 WHIP.

His effort was rewarded by the Dodgers taking a decided lead in the fifth inning. Gavin Lux led off with a single and Freddie Freeman walked to set the table for Trea Turner.

Turner hit an RBI flare single into center field to tie the game and extend his hitting streak to 20 games. Will Smith’s sacrifice fly drove in the game-winning run.

With Craig Kimbrel unavailable due, Daniel Hudson was tasked with converting the save. He allowed a leadoff double to Ketel Marte but followed that by retiring the next three batters faced.

Mookie Betts closing in on Dodgers history

Betts’ 11 home runs are the most in Dodgers franchise history for the month of May since Roy Campanella hit 12 in 1953. Betts’ 20 extra-base hits in May are second-most in franchise history, trailing only Jackie Robinson’s 21 in 1949.

Assuming he starts every game, Betts will have three more days to set new Dodgers records.
