The Los Angeles Dodgers put on a show for fans in their final regular-season game at Dodger Stadium, coming away with a blowout 14-0 victory over the San Diego Padres. The win lowered their magic number to clinch the National League West to six.
Three of the Dodgers’ 16 hits left the yard, with the first coming off the bat of Manny Machado on the first pitch of the second inning. The home run was Machado’s second in as many days and 37th overall on the season between the Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles.
Machado also added an RBI single in the sixth inning, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBI on the day.
Sunday marked Matt Kemp’s 34th birthday and he celebrated the right way by having a big day at the plate. Kemp hit his 21st home run of the season in the second, then later drove in two with a single and doubled to fall just a triple shy of a birthday cycle. Kemp’s home run gave him 1,000 career RBI.
It’s no secret that Austin Barnes has struggled at the plate this season, but he contributed on Sunday with a big two-run home run, his third of the season.
Overall, nine different Dodgers players scored at least one run and seven drove in runs. Perhaps no one was more impressive at the plate though than starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu, who went 3-for-3 and scored two runs.
Ryu also had a very strong outing on the mound, tossing six shutout innings to lower his season ERA to 2.00. He allowed just four hits while striking out eight without allowing a walk.
