After a disappointing loss in the series opener, the Los Angeles Dodgers got back on track by earning a 3-2 comeback victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Tuesday night.
The Dodgers faced a familiar opponent in left-hander Robbie Ray and they did not waste any time jumping on him as Kiké Hernandez led off the game with a home run. It was Hernandez’s 12th homer this season and fourth overall of his career off Ray.
Ray settled in from there and didn’t run into any more trouble until the sixth inning, which ultimately ended up costing the Diamondbacks the game.
With the Dodgers trailing 2-1, Justin Turner hit a one-out home run to tie the game. Turner hasn’t quite found his power stroke this season but is now up to eight home runs on the year; three of which came in one game.
Cody Bellinger and Max Muncy were both out of the lineup with a tough lefty on the mound, so that meant that other Dodgers needed to step up, and they did just that.
Alex Verdugo and Chris Taylor hit third and fourth, respectively, in the Dodgers lineup for the first time this season. After Turner’s home run, they Verdugo and Taylor combined for back-to-back opposite-field doubles off Ray to give Los Angeles a 3-2 lead.
After that, it was up to the Dodgers bullpen to protect the lead, and they succeeded. Ross Stripling got his first start since April and was on a 60-pitch limit, so he lasted just three innings.
The bullpen closed out the game with six shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out five and walking one. Joe Kelly got it started with a scoreless fourth, followed by three innings from Julio Urias, and then one apiece from Pedro Baez and Kenley Jansen to close it out.
