The Los Angeles Dodgers fell into an early deficit and played with a short bullpen, but came from behind for a 4-3 win over the New York Mets in the series opener at Citi Field.

Tuesday’s matchup between the teams with the top records in the National League didn’t produce the cleanest game, but it did feature several tense moments. Gavin Lux was involved in multiple high-leverage situations, and he produced a game-high three RBI to lead the Dodgers offense.

Lux’s first hit was a two-run single into left field that provided the Dodgers with a 3-1 lead in the third inning. The Mets pulled even in the fourth, but Lux provided what held as a game-winning hit in the seventh inning.

Freddie Freeman provided the initial spark by leading off with a hustle double on a soft grounder that beat the shift and rolled into left field. Will Smith pinch-hit for Joey Gallo but was intentionally walked with one out.

Big game, former team, first career save. Jake Reed was feeling that one! 😤

Lux made the Mets pay for their decision by hitting a go-ahead RBI single into center field. His three RBI were good for a season high.

Dodgers pitching performances

Andrew Heaney went five innings and held the Mets to three runs (two earned). His throwing error led to New York taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning, and Heaney also continued to be troubled by the home run ball as the Mets hit two solo shots.

Heath Hembree worked a scoreless inning in his Dodgers debut, and Jake Reed converted the first save of his career. Alex Vesia and Evan Phillips also contributed a scoreless inning each.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed after the win that Hembree, Vesia, Phillips and Reed were the only relief pitchers available.
