Max Muncy returned to the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup on Thursday and combined with Freddie Freeman to help lead them to an 11-9 comeback win against the Chicago White Sox to take the rubber match at Guaranteed Rate Field.
The White Sox snapped Tyler Anderson’s scoreless streak at 28 innings and jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Dylan Cease kept the Dodgers off the board through four innings, only to come unraveled and fail to make it out of the fifth.
The Dodgers’ comeback was aided by a Jake Burger error that left the bases loaded with one out. Cease struck out Mookie Betts but then gave up a two-run double to Freeman. Trea Turner’s RBI infield single got the Dodgers within a run, and Muncy’s double gave them a 5-4 lead.
White Sox manager Tony La Russa inexplicably left Cease on the mound until he walked Will Smith on his 45th pitch of the inning. Going to Matt Foster didn’t provide immediate relief as he walked Justin Turner to load the bases, then allowed a run to score on a wild pitch.

Freeman added an RBI single in the sixth inning and after Turner was intentionally walked despite falling behind 1-2 in the count, Muncy lined a three-run homer out to left field. Muncy appeared to take exception to La Russa’s decision and showed plenty of emotion as he crossed home plate and celebrated with teammates.
Gavin Lux pulled an RBI double to right field in the ninth inning to give him a first career four-hit game.
Dodgers pitching hangs on
Along with having his scoreless innings streak snapped, Anderson labored through his outing and only pitched three-plus innings. Brusdar Graterol inherited a bases-loaded jam and promptly hit a batter, with the run charged to Anderson.
Phil Bickford, Alex Vesia and Daniel Hudson combined to allow four runs, but the bullpen did just enough to secure the win.
