Dodgers Highlights: David Peralta & J.D. Martinez Home Runs Against Phillies; Bobby Miller Strikeouts

The Los Angeles Dodgers picked themselves up from a third walk-off loss in four games by shutting out the Philadelphia Phillies, 9-0, behind a dominant start from Bobby Miller and six-run seventh inning.

Aaron Nola had a perfect game until James Outman’s two-out double in the second inning that also led to a rally. Mookie Betts followed with an RBI single and Freddie Freeman lined a base hit into left field as well.

David Peralta then extended the Dodgers’ lead to 3-0 in third inning with a solo home run.

Miller protected that as he tied a career high with seven strikeouts over six innings of work. He faced trouble in the second when the Phillies loaded the bases, but he retired Edmundo Sosa to escape the jam.

Miller also set a career high with 104 pitches, surpassing the 95 from his MLB debut. The shutout performance extended Miller’s scoreless streak to 16 consecutive innings.

He also became the second Dodgers pitcher since at least 1901 to complete a minimum of five innings and one run or fewer allowed in all of his first four starts. Kenta Maeda previously accomplished the feat in 2016.

Miller is the ninth pitcher since 1901 to allow a combined two runs or fewer through his first four starts, with the only other Dodgers to achieve that being Fernando Valenzuela (1981) and Maeda (2016).

After the 24-year-old came out of the game, the Dodgers exploded to break the game open in the seventh inning. Betts collected his second run-scoring single of the day, Will Smith hit into an RBI groundout and a wild pitch made it 6-0. Martinez then connected on a three-run homer.

With long balls from Peralta and Martinez, the Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays are tied for most home runs in the Majors this season at 111.

Dodgers bullpen game

With an opportunity to go .500 on their six-game road trip, the Dodgers are turning to a bullpen game because Julio Urías is experiencing lingering tightness in his left hamstring.

Andre Jackson completed a three-inning save on Saturday to combine with Miller in taking a burden off the stable of relief pitchers that will be needed in the series finale at Citizens Bank Park.
