The Los Angeles Dodgers kept their hot streak going on Sunday afternoon, coming from behind to defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 7-6, to earn a three-game sweep at Dodger Stadium.
The win marked the fourth straight for the Dodgers and their 11th in the last 14 games. They improved to 19-11 on the season, good for the best record in the National League and most wins in baseball.
As has been the case a lot this season, Cody Bellinger led the way offensively for Los Angeles. He got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning with a sacrifice fly off Pirates starter Trevor Williams.
Bellinger’s big swing of the day came in the bottom of the fourth though when he hit a solo home run, his 14th of the season. With 14 home runs, Bellinger has now tied a Major League record for most long balls before May 1.
Christian Yelich (this season), Albert Pujols (2006) and Alex Rodriguez (2007) all also hit 14.
Bellinger’s day wasn’t done there though. He later added an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to extend the Dodgers’ lead to 7-5, which ended up being necessary considering the Pirates cut the deficit to 7-6 in the eighth.
Max Muncy also had a standout day offensively for the Dodgers, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, including a run-scoring single to tie the game in the fifth inning, and then another one to take the lead in the seventh.
Rich Hill made his season debut and settled down nicely after a couple of rough innings to begin the game. He allowed five hits and five runs (one earned) in six innings of work while striking out six in a no-decision.
