The Los Angeles Dodgers have bounced back from losing a series to the New York Mets with consecutive wins against the Cleveland Guardians and now can end their road trip with a sweep at Progressive Field.
As of this publishing, Wednesday’s game is remains on track to start at 1:10 p.m. local time. Clayton Kershaw is due to start for the Dodgers, but the Guardians are in need of a pitcher after scratching Slade Cecconi from his scheduled outing because of right groin tightness.
But there’s a chance neither team takes the field due to inclement weather being in the Cleveland forecast.
According to Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said multiple possibilities are being considered:
“There’s just a lot of different ways we could go – whether it’s start on time, delay, stay the night,” Roberts said. “We’ve talked through the mutual off day situation whether it’s Thursday or later in the summer. Right now, I just think with time we’ll know more at the end of the game, tomorrow morning we’ll know more.”
The Dodgers have already endured one rain delay on their road trip, when their series opener against the Mets was halted for one hour and 38 minutes. First pitch at Citi Field was on time despite a steady rain falling, and the teams managed to play just two innings before the rain delay began.
Because of how long it lasted, Kershaw could not resume his outing. Nor did Mets starter Griffin Canning. Kershaw expressed some frustration with how the entire situation was handled, specifically with still beginning the game at its originally scheduled start time.
Will Dodgers and Guardians reschedule?
If a decision is made to postpone the series finale, the Dodgers and Guardians in some sense could easily meet Thursday, which is currently an off day for both teams.
There also are mutual off days on June 12, June 23, June 30, July 17, July 31, Aug. 7, Aug. 28 and Sept. 22.
However, there are several logistic and travel hurdles involved with essentially each of those dates. The most logical could be July 31, which is the day after the Dodgers finish a road series with the Cincinnati Reds and sees the Guardians in the midst of a homestand.
