Dodgers Free Agent Rumors: Kiké Hernandez Looking For Everyday Role

Heading into the 2020 season, Kiké Hernandez acknowledged the Los Angeles Dodgers could be facing a final run with the same core group that had been together for several years. Hernandez alluded to it as a potential ‘Last Dance,’ using the title from a critically acclaimed documentary that focused on Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.

Six weeks out from 2021 Spring Training, Hernandez could either prove to be prophetic or his comments will have been much ado about nothing. The Dodgers had yet to move on any of their key free agents until Tuesday night when Blake Treinen was re-signed to a two-year contract.

Hernandez, Joc Pederson and Justin Turner have drawn reported interest from other clubs. During an appearance on MLB Network’s “High Heat,” David Vassegh of AM 570 L.A. Sports said Hernandez wants to play on a daily basis:

“He wants an opportunity to play every day, so that’s one right-handed bat that you’re losing.”

If Hernandez desires a role that has him in the lineup on a daily basis, that is unlikely to come with the Dodgers. The team does have a question mark at second base, but it’s a position Hernandez won the starting job at in 2019, only to struggle and have it slip away.

It was recently suggested Hernandez re-signing was an unlikely outcome. An opportunity to start every day could come with the Minnesota Twins, who are among the teams that have been connected to Hernandez and also have a void at second base. The Boston Red Sox could also be a landing spot.

Even while filling a utility role for the bulk of the past six seasons with the Dodgers, Hernandez appeared in at least 100 games in four years, including three of at least 130 games. Furthermore, Hernandez played in 80% (48) of 60 games this past season.

Dodgers face multiple questions

If the Dodgers are to lose Hernandez in free agency, it would create a need for a super utility player the team has been heavily reliant on. Chris Taylor figures to remain in the outfield, which could mean more opportunities for Zach McKinstry.

As for second base, Gavin Lux may be the early favorite but that could easily change if the Dodgers were to sign DJ LeMahieu. Though, he also is capable of playing third base, which may be necessary if Turner is not re-signed.
