Dodgers Free Agency Rumors: Edwin Díaz Signed To Record-Breaking Contract

Coming off a second consecutive World Series title, the Los Angeles Dodgers faced a need in their outfield but also stood to benefit from addressing the bullpen as well.

The team reportedly made a contract offer to Raisel Iglesias, and pursued Devin Williams and Ryan Helsley. In the time since, they were connected to Edwin Díaz and Robert Suarez, with indications suggesting the Dodgers didn’t figure to factor prominently in the chase for the New York Mets free agent.

But according to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Dodgers are signing Díaz to a three-year, $69 million contract:

Closer Edwin Díaz's deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers is for three years and $69 million, sources tell ESPN. The Dodgers, who were targeting bullpen help this winter, got the best closer on the market, setting a new AAV record for relievers.

Díaz is going to enter his age-32 season, and projections had him signing a contract of three to four years worth an average annual value of around $21 to $25 million. He became a free agent by opting out of the final two years and $38 million of his contract with the Mets.

The right-hander is coming off a season in which he threw 66.1 innings, converted 28 saves and had a 1.63 ERA while striking out 38% of hitters and walking 8.1%.

Díaz leaves the Mets, who reportedly still had interest in retaining him even after the addition of Williams on a three-year, $51 million contract.

The Toronto Blue Jays and Atlanta Braves were also believed to have interest in Díaz.

What Edwin Díaz signing means for Dodgers

By signing Díaz, the Dodgers add a significant right-handed arm to their bullpen and have a clear closer. Tanner Scott was expected to fill the role this past season but struggled mightily in his first year with the team.

The Dodgers have expressed optimism in Scott bouncing back in 2026, but by signing Díaz now have insurance to finish games.
