Shohei Ohtani made MLB history by winning the 2025 National League MVP Award, marking a fourth overall time he’s taken home the hardware as the best player.
Ohtani is the only player to ever win multiple MVP Awards in both leagues. In 2024 he made Dodgers franchise history as their first unanimous MVP winner.
The MVP announcement was part of a successful day for Ohtani, who additionally won the Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter Award and Hank Aaron Award while also earning a selection to the 2025 All-MLB First Team.

Ohtani received all 30 first-place votes for the 2025 NL MVP Award. Each of his four MVP Awards have come in unanimous fashion.
This year, Ohtani was followed by Philadelphia Phillies free agent Kyle Schwarber garnering 23 votes for second place and five for third, and one each for fourth and fifth, totaling 260 overall points.
Fellow NL MVP finalist Juan Soto of the New York Mets had 231 points behind four votes for second place, 15 for third, nine for fourth and two for fifth.
While Ohtani received all 30 first-place votes for NL MVP, the final ballot included 22 additional players garnering some consideration. Among them were Ohtani’s Dodgers teammates Freddie Freeman and Will Smith.
Freddie Freeman
Freeman, who was a finalist for 2023 NL MVP and came in 17th place last year, had 29 points in voting for this season.
Freeman received one vote for third place, one for fifth, two for eighth, four for ninth and one for 10th. He placed 13th in final voting for the 2025 NL MVP Award.
Freeman’s only MVP Award to this point came in the 2020 season as a member of the Atlanta Braves.
Will Smith
Smith was further down the 2025 NL MVP ballot as he received one vote each for ninth and 10th place.
