When Freddie Freeman hit a ground ball that resulted in a game-ending double play on Tuesday night, he didn’t run down the first-base line with the hustle that has become so synonymous with what will ultimately be a Hall of Fame career.
To most observers, that could have easily been explained by the Los Angeles Dodgers trailing 11-1 in what would become their third loss by double-digit runs this season. But in reality, Freeman is hampered by yet another injury.
“He’s dealing with a little quad thing,” manager Dave Roberts said before the series finale at Petco Park.
Mookie Betts and Teoscar Hernández were both removed early in the Dodgers’ lopsided loss to the San Diego Padres, but Freeman played all nine innings.
“He was not going to come out of the game, so for me, my deal with him is, if you’re going to play today and stay in the game last night, then manage it,” Roberts said. “So let’s not go crazy on the bases.
“He’s got the ankle thing and he’s dealing with his quad. If you’re not giving 110% down the line, that’s no problem. So he is managing a quad situation.”
Roberts said Freeman suffered the quad injury while covering first base, and it also was to explain for his limp after making a catch in foul territory in the eighth inning.
“He went over there a little gingerly. So it’s a little something that he’s managing,” Roberts said.
Freeman went 1-for-4 with a walk on Wednesday and seemingly got through the game without issue. There were some instances of walking slowly and with a limp, and Freeman twice jogged up the line.
However, his lone hit was an infield single that saw Freeman break into a full sprint once he saw the ball go off Adrian Morejon’s glove.
Freddie Freeman injuries
Freeman went into the 2025 season recovering from right ankle surgery that was required because of the severe sprain he suffered late last year. Freeman then aggravated the ankle and ended up on the 10-day injured list after slipping in the shower.
That’s added onto the process of needing to manage it, and now Freeman is dealing with the minor quad issue.
