Dodgers Set Franchise Record With Early Home Run Surge

The Los Angeles Dodgers salvaged a series split against the Colorado Rockies on Monday in a 12-3 win at Coors Field that saw them match a season-high with five home runs.

Max Muncy and Dalton Rushing both left the yard twice, while Miguel Rojas added his first blast as well. Muncy and Rojas went back-to-back in the top of the second inning to give L.A. a 2-1 lead.

The Dodgers have now hit 42 home runs in their first 22 games this season, which is a new franchise record according to ESPN Insights.

Muncy leads the Dodgers with eight home runs, which is tied for third in the Majors behind only Yordan Alvarez (10) and Aaron Judge (nine).

Muncy is followed by Rushing, who has already hit a career-high seven home runs. The 25-year-old is in the midst of a breakout season and has drawn praise from manager Dave Roberts for making the most of his opportunities.

Andy Pages and Shohei Ohtani have both hit five home runs thus far, while Teoscar Hernández is right behind them with four. Freddie Freeman (three), Kyle Tucker (three), Will Smith (two), Mookie Betts (two), Alex Freeland (one), Hyeseong Kim (one) and Rojas (one) have also gone yard in the Dodgers’ first 22 games.

The Dodgers’ 42 home runs rank first in the Majors by a wide margin; the Los Angeles Angels are the next closest team with 34 home runs this season, followed by the New York Yankees (32), Athletics (30) and Houston Astros (30).

Dalton Rushing gave up start for Ryan Ward

Rushing was originally expected to start at first base for the Dodgers on Sunday, but passed up the opportunity so Ryan Ward could get immediate playing time.

Ward, who was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City earlier in the day, went 2-for-5 with an RBI in his MLB debut.

Rushing still got into the game as a pinch hitter in the top of the ninth inning and was robbed of a potential two-run single by second baseman Willi Castro. Ward was then robbed of a third hit when right fielder Troy Johnston made a diving catch to end the game.
