The Los Angeles Dodgers won back-to-back elimination games on the road to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays and repeat as World Series champions.
While a monumental moment for the franchise, it also represented the sixth consecutive season that a player named Will Smith was part of the World Series-winning team.
The streak began in 2020, when the Dodgers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays to capture their first title since 1988. That represented Smith’s first full MLB season, although it featured a shortened schedule due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Then in 2021, the relief pitcher by the same name won the World Series as a member of the Atlanta Braves. It was the left-hander’s first time playing in the Fall Classic after making his MLB debut during the 2012 season.
Smith, the reliever, went on to win the next two World Series with the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers, respectively, giving him three championships in his career.
The 36-year-old’s streak of winning the World Series was snapped in 2024 when he signed with the Kansas City Royals and they were knocked out in the American League Division Series. That also represented Smith’s final season as a player.
The Dodgers’ Smith would carry the torch as L.A. returned to the World Series in 2024 and eliminated the New York Yankees.
Smith added a third World Series title to his own résumé this year as the Dodgers came back against the Blue Jays in a memorable Fall Classic that reached seven games.
