The Los Angeles Dodgers welcomed back another key contributor on Wednesday as Tommy Edman was activated off the 10-day injured list ahead of their series finale against the Colorado Rockies.
Edman missed just over a month due to a sprained right ankle, which has been a reoccurring issue since last season.
Edman took a deliberate approach in his recovery to ensure he would be available to play center field down the stretch, and the 30-year-old started at the position in the Dodgers’ 9-0 win over the Rockies.
Manager Dave Roberts still envisions Edman getting most of his reps in center field, but noted he could eventually resume playing second base as well.
“I see him playing more versus left than right, and then I want to see him with my own eyes in games,” Roberts said of Edman’s role with the Dodgers.
“He’s going to be taking ground balls at second base as well, but I can’t really say yet how much I’m going to play him at second base versus center field until I really see it.
“Because I do know that kind of getting off the ball is something I’m going to be really mindful of watching. So once he gets to full speed, it’s kind of easier, which lends itself to center field. So I can’t really answer that right now.
“Today is a day that I would’ve liked Alex Call in there, but [Edman] is just going to play the outfield right now. I just don’t know how long that’s going to be.”
Edman has primarily played second base this season, but a move to center field would allow Andy Pages to shift over to left field, where Roberts previously noted the team needs more offensive production amid Michael Conforto’s season-long struggles.
Tommy Edman’s 2025 season
In 87 games with the Dodgers this season, Edman is hitting .228/.281/.394 with 13 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs and 44 RBI across 336 plate appearances.
